Northern red oak is one of the most popular North American hardwoods. It is very strong and durable hardwood famed for its distinctive open-grain patterns. Red oak is available in stains from clear natural to very dark tones. Some of our builders also offer quarter-sawn red oak which provides a straighter, tighter grained look. This is most popular in “Mission” styles of furniture.Quarter-sawn white oak is very hard, strong and durable. It is frequently called “Tiger Oak” because of the medullar ray fleck and interlocking grain. While still very popular in craftsman and prairie mission designs, quarter-sawn white oak has become a favorite in more “traditional” styles of home furniture.
